Nightclub licence suspended following NYE brawl

Published Date: 20/Jan/2010

Manchester City Council’s licensing committee suspended the premises licence for Mansion on Deansgate during a meeting on Thursday January 14.

The decision means the premises will remain closed until a City Council licensing review hearing, expected early next month, during which the panel will decide what action to take in respect of the licence.

Greater Manchester Police requested the move following a series of incidents at the nightclub, which had previously been known as Ampersand.

A police officer was assaulted during trouble at the premises on New Year’s Eve, while a man and a woman were also hit with a bottle on the same night, and 10 other offences have been recorded at the premises since February 1 last year.

Members of the public and businesses are now invited to make their own views known during the hearing.

Councillor Mike Carmody, Chair of Manchester City Council’s Licensing Committee, said: "Most licence holders across the city operate responsibly, but when serious concerns are raised, the committee considers what action is most appropriate.

“In this instance, we have ordered a temporary suspension of the premises licence before deciding on a permanent outcome to the issue.”

Inspector Ron Orr said: “The Manchester City Safe Policing Team works closely with licensed premises across Manchester to ensure that people can enjoy a safe and happy time at bars, pubs and clubs in the area. This licence suspension demonstrates that police and the council will not tolerate incidents of violence or disorder and will work to make sure that premises are effectively managed."
