Taxi Testing Centre Examiner

Job description

Part-time / 22 hours per week / Permanent

Would you like to play a key role in ensuring that licenced taxis are roadworthy and meet standards for the safety of users and drivers?

The Taxi and MOT Testing Centre provide an essential service to all taxis which are licensed by Leicester City Council. We have a statutory duty to ensure all vehicles are compliant with standards set by the Council and specified by DVSA (Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency).

As an experienced MOT Tester/Vehicle Examiner, you’ll join a team of specialist vehicle inspectors who check for compliance and roadworthiness by carrying out MOT tests on vehicles owned by the public. Working in a safe and clean workshop, you’ll be provided with your own automated test lane and equipment to carry out your role efficiently. You’ll be supported by experienced and knowledgeable team who all work collaboratively to provide a high quality and efficient service to our customers.

Based at Lower Willow Street, this is a permanent, part-time role for 22 hours per week from Monday to Wednesday. However, you’ll have a flexible approach to hours and days worked. You may be required on very rare occasions to work on Saturdays. It is essential you hold a full driving licence to carry out some of the driving tasks.

What you'll be doing

Using your expertise, you’ll carry out compliance tests and in-depth MOT inspections and examinations on taxis in accordance to set standards. This will include checking vehicle body, suspension, steering as well as the cleanliness and conditions of the overall vehicle to ensure they are presentable and safe for customers to use. To meet our licensing regulations, you’ll ensure licensing plates and stickers are in order and legible on the vehicles. If the vehicle fails the MOT test, you’ll provide detailed reasons and advise the owner to get the necessary repairs done within a set period to do a re-test. In some cases, you may have to suspend a vehicle taxi license if the vehicle is not fit for purpose and inform the Licensing team of the action taken. You’ll carry out the annual test for Black Cabs to check the meters, which will involve driving these vehicles around the local area. On occasion you may be required to work with the police in carrying out spot checks on taxis.

What you'll need

You’ll be a qualified Level 2 MOT Tester (Class 4), with in-depth knowledge of vehicle maintenance and experience of carrying out vehicle examinations. With experience of working face to face with the public, you’ll have experience of carrying out regulatory enforcement duties such as issuing warnings and suspending licences. Using strong written and verbal communication skills, you’ll be able to provide detailed feedback to customers and liaise effectively with colleagues within the licensing and enforcement teams. You’ll have good attention to detail and excellent literacy and numeracy skills to be able to complete manual vehicle inspection reports and ensure records are accurate and up to date. With the ability to undertake physical elements of the role, you’ll be able to work under pressure and prioritise your workload to meet deadlines.

What we can offer you

As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We’ll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from a number of flexible benefits, including childcare vouchers, discounts on city buses and trains and help with relocation to Leicester, where appropriate.
