Betting shops, zoos and outdoor attractions open alongside shops with further easing of lockdown restrictions Published Date: 14/06/2020

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) (Amendment) (No. 4) Regulations 2020 bring further easing of lockdown regulations.

This instrument makes a number of changes to the Restrictions Regulations to enable and support gradual relaxation of restriction measures starting on 15 June 2020.  The instrument amends Schedule 2:

  1. To allow shops to open
  2. To allow retail galleries to open.
  3. To allow the outdoor areas of zoos, safari parks, aquariums and outdoor visitor attractions at farms or other animal attractions to open. Attractions offering visitors physical contact with animals are not allowed to open, with the exception of horse-riding stables.
  4. To allow drive-in cinemas to open
  5. To allow auction houses to open
  6. To allow shops to open at attractions such as botanical gardens, heritage sites and landmarks such as observation wheels.

Amusement arcades are not included under the relaxations (they are classed as 'leisure'), while betting shops are classified as 'retail' and will open.

The Gambling Commission have published FAQs for operators: ‘Information for operators re-opening land-based gambling premises’.

The police and local authorities will continue to monitor compliance with the regulations, including the amendments set out in this instrument.
