Small society lotteries registered with local authorities - minimum age limit Published Date: 04/07/2023

The government believes lotteries should only be available to adults, to mitigate the risk of gambling-related harm to children. The minimum age for the National Lottery was raised to 18 in 2021.

The government intends to legislate to increase the age limit for society lotteries from 16 to 18, when Parliamentary time allows. Many society lottery operators already set a minimum age of 18 years, but the government is challenging those who still sell to 16 and 17 year olds, to stop this practice.

In the meantime, local authorities are asked to bring this to the attention of registered and new lottery operators in their areas.
