Vehicle Compliance Test Exercise in Southampton 1st March 2019

On Tuesday 26 February officers from Southampton City Council Licensing Department joined forces with Hampshire Constabulary to carry out a joint operation in the city.

The operation targeted taxis and private hire vehicles to ensure they were fully compliant with taxi regulations, as well as being roadworthy.

More than thirty licensed vehicles were stopped, seventeen of these were sent to be examined. Nine were given notices to get minor issues rectified and were fit to continue working, seven were suspended by Council Licensing Enforcement Officers with immediate effect until the faults found have been made safe.

Phil Bates, Licensing Manager, from Southampton City Council said “These vehicles convey members of the public and have to be maintained to a higher standard than a private vehicle. We will be working with the trade to ensure high standards are maintained, it is both the drivers and owners responsibility to ensure the vehicles have a maintenance schedule that ensures Southampton licensed vehicles remain fit for purpose.”
