Markets Development Officer - Canterbury City Council Closing Date: 07/04/2024

Do you have experience in working in a city centre environment or as a market trader, with a good knowledge of the issues affecting town centres, including specific knowledge of the context for markets? If so, this role might be the perfect fit for you.

We are recruiting a Markets Development Officer to work collaboratively with local businesses to shape the market and street offering across the Canterbury district. This is a new role and offers an exciting opportunity for the right candidate with the vision and experience to develop an offering which brings our city and town centres to life.

About this Markets Development job in Canterbury:

The role of the Markets Development Officer is key in the council's commitment to reinstate the Canterbury Market. In this role, you will be:

  • Responsible for management and development of all market, street trading and concession activity across the district.
  • Working to build strong relationships with market traders, event organisers, council members and other key stakeholders to develop existing and identify new market opportunities across the District.
  • Leading development of a market/ street trading plan identifying needs and products.
  • Working with colleagues to develop and implement a marketing strategy to support the promotion of Canterbury district markets.
  • Establishing communication networks and relationships between key officers and partners engaged in town centre activity in order to develop existing and new markets in the Canterbury District.

Working pattern:

  • Full-time, 37 hours per week
  • Flexible, hybrid working arrangements
  • A full week off over Christmas in addition to your annual leave allowance

About you, the ideal Markets Development Officer for our team:

Your qualifications:

  • Qualified to A-Level standard or equivalent.

Your knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of Licencing legislation and commercial practices around markets and street trading.
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues affecting town centres, including specific knowledge of the context for markets, local businesses and organisations in and around town centres.

Your skills

  • Communicates clearly and effectively to diverse audiences in writing and verbally on a range of topics.
  • Influencing and persuading skills.
  • Ability to work with a degree of autonomy as well as being an effective team player.

Your experience

  • Experience of working directly with businesses and business groups in a similar role.
