England - COVID-19 Tier changes from 19 December announced Published Date: 17/12/2020

In a statement to the House of Commons, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has announced that more areas will change tiers with effect from 00:01 on Saturday 19 December 2020. The Regulations are due to the laid on Friday 18 December 2020.

Hancock says that in the UK, and across the world, coronavirus cases are on the rise and that while no one wants tougher restrictions for any longer than necessary, they will be used where necessary to ease pressure on the NHS.

From 00:01 Saturday 19 December - the following areas will be placed into tier three:

  • Bedfordshire
  • Buckinghamshire
  • Berkshire
  • Peterborough
  • The whole of Hertfordshire
  • Surrey, except Waverley
  • Hastings and Rother
  • Portsmouth, Gosport and Havant

Matt Hancock said cases are up 46% in the past week in the south-east of England and up by two-thirds in the east of England.

Also from 00:01 Saturday 19 December Bristol and North Somerset will move  down from tier three into tier two, while Herefordshire will move from tier two to tier one.
